CER0205Making functional pottery
Instructor: Sarah McCarthy
Class dates: Each Monday and Wednesday, February 5-28, 2007
Time: 5-8 pm
Students will learn basic techniques for making functional pottery thrown on the wheel. We will explore forms such as bowls, plates, mugs and vases and forms you have always wanted to use in your daily life! More experienced throwers will learn altering techniques for creating more visually appealing pots. All levels are welcome.
Cost: $240 for Jacksonville Center members; $275 without membership.

Time: 9-4:30 pm
This is a fun and creative class for students of any skill level. Beginners are welcome. Students will learn to make simple pinch pots in animal forms that they turn into whistles.

CER0331Pit firing
Instructor: Martha Sullivan
Class dates: Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1 2007
Times: 10-4:30 on Saturday and 2-4:30 on Sunday
Learn primitive firing techniques. This class will focus on the subtle decoration achieved with wood firing in the ground. Students will learn to construct the pit kiln and how to load it with pots. We will spend and afternoon firing bisque pots that students bring with them. All levels welcome.

Class dates: Wed. April 18; Wed. April 25, and Wed. May 2, 2007
Time: 6-8 pm
Learn how to carve soapstone using chisels and rasps. Discover how easy it is to create one-of-a-kind sculptures. Discussion will include history, functionality, composition and finishing. No experience necessary.

Time: 9-4:30 pm
Enjoy the thrill of making things with iron. This two day introductory course is designed to cover blacksmithing basics, make something you've always wanted to make or make things you didn't realize were possible. No previous blacksmithing experience is required. All levels welcome.
Cost: $150 for Jacksonville Center members; $180 without membership.

SAW0321Mandolin making
Instructor: Jeff Sebens
Class dates: Each Wednesday from March 21 to May 2, 2007. (No class on April 4)
Time: 6-8 pm
This course will guide you through the process of constructing an A-style mandolin. We will be working from kits with some of the harder steps completed but you will gain the skills needed to understand the complete process and you will go home with a beautiful handcrafted instrument. Some woodworking experience is helpful, but not required.
Cost: $120 for materials plus $120 tuition for Jacksonville Center members. (Tuition is $145 for non-members.)

CER0604BIntro to wheel
Instructor: McCabe Coolidge
Class dates: Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from June 4 to 15
Time: 1 to 4 pm
This class is for all those who like to have their hands in clay, especially beginners. We will learn how to throw and trim pots, glaze them and offer one another support through laughter, surprises, the sharing of frustrations and joys.
Suggested donation: $25
Value: $180 for Jacksonville Center members; $210 without membership.
Please note: This class is open to New River Valley residents age 12 and up on a first come, first served basis, through The Greenfire Fund.

About the Greenfire Fund- --...-- -
The Greenfire Fund was recently established with funding from donors to make educational art activities accessible to those of all ages, races and classes, especially youth, elders and underserved populations. Donations are suggested but are not required of enrolled participants. These classes will be offered on a "first come, first served" basis to New River Valley residents with acceptance of other applicants if the classes are not filled within two weeks of the class start dates.
